Middle Tennessee Chapter ALA Community Challenge The Middle Tennessee Chapter of the Association of Legal Administrators stepped up to the community challenge with two events for 2005. On October 8, 2005, members of the Chapter participated in the American Cancer Society's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer five-mile walk held in historic downtown Nashville, Tennessee. Members of the Middle Tennessee Chapter participated by walking, fundraising, and/or purchasing t-shirts. The group raised some $2,500 for the American Cancer Society by participating for the second consecutive year in support of a fellow ALA member who is a breast cancer survivor. The second community challenge event for the Middle Tennessee Chapter was held on December 3, 2005, as the group volunteered at St. Luke's Community House in Nashville. St. Luke's offers many services to underprivileged families in the West Nashville area including food, educational services, and sponsoring families for Christmas. Many members of the Middle Tennessee Chapter volunteered to sort donated toys for St. Luke's to distribute to children for Christmas. In 2008, the Middle Tennessee chapter participated with other ALA chapters as ALA celebrated their 10th year of Community Challenge events. This year was a little different, in that the ALA challenged chapters to host events or make contributions to raise money for The SmileTrain, an international organization dedicated soley to providing free cleft surgeries to children in developing counties. A contribution was made to The Smile Train (www.smiletrain.org) and the ALA reported contributions of over $50,000 were received from individuals and member chapters. Locally, the Middle Tennessee chapter participated in the first ever Legal Food Fight, a virtual food drive among legal professionals to benefit the Second Harvest Mobile Food Pantry. The Food Pantry serves 46 counties in the Middle Tennessee and West Tennessee service area. The food drive ran from November 17 through December 31.
